about

" Who remembers the first time they heard Fontanarosa ? The moment, the place, none of it matters much. Their music is as natural as the blue in the sky. Whether at sea, drifting on a bed or standing in a basement, no one remembers the first time they heard Fontanarosa, because as soon as it starts, it's their music that fills us.
« I have moved a lot in my life. When I was young, in Spain, Brazil or East of France, I never settled down, so I lived in the imaginary space that music gave me, » says Paul Verwaerde. Fontanarosa is his home, the one Paul made for himself. Driven by his father's dreams, he and his family had traveled the world, living different cities where he discovered his own language : music. « For me, there was only this: school was hard, but I had a band and I really wanted to live like our idols. Then my family left again, maybe one time too many. »
For fifteen years, Paul remained silent. He avoided bands, stayed away from his imaginary family, afraid he was of breaking the bond again. « Until I was thirty, I forbade myself from becoming a musician. It seemed impossible or too late. Then I discovered the music scene in Lyon and saw that It was possible to wake up every morning and only do music. »
Built around a homemade E.P., Fontanarosa shows its true self on its first album, the great "Are You There?" released by Howlin Banana. It’s meticulosy crafted music, yet so well played that its naturalness is surprising. « I spend my days polishing my songs, working on the lyrics, figuring out guitar parts. But when I bring all this to the band, things move quickly and everything becomes easier ». The modeling is pure, the playing gushes like a spring: these four could have played together for a century and they wouldn't sound better. « The strange thing is that Fontanarosa, with Grégoire Cagnat on bass, Florian Adrien on drums, Kevin Lafont on guitar and me on guitar and vocals, is a complete construction. We barely knew each other. In fact, we became close while playing together. »
It took Paul V. 15 years to rediscover his vocation. It took him only two years to figure out where to take it. « "Are You There" was me making peace with my 18-year-old self. And now that I have found myself again, the band can begin its journey. » “Take a Look At The Sea", that's it: looking at the ocean before leaving the dock. Dark, with a hint of black as in the first two singles ('Heartland', 'Door To Door'), the band sounds wonderful. The guitars' crescendo that goes up without limit ('Dear Rising Dawn'), clear notes of electric rock mix with English folk harmony ('Endless Track'), they all give their best and God knows what they are capable of. « There is nothing on this album that doesn't feel like Fontanarosa to me : this is the music I always wanted to make, nothing that was done automatically, nothing that didn't come straight from the heart. » “What a Day”, written for his very young son; 'Care', for those who have past: nothing, indeed, that doesn't come straight from the heart, a place where the people this album is adressed to belong.

« I've been lost my whole life, but is that a bad thing ? I mean, when I pick up my guitar, I never know where I'm going, and then these songs come to me like gifts. So why should life be any different? »
